These spicy meatballs are always a hit when entertaining, the chilli turns a family favourite into a adult spicy treat, while the sambal dipping sauce is sure to separate the boys from the men.

Cook ahead and reheat when your guests arrive.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion (Large)
  • 2 red chillies (Seeded)
  • 2 cloves garlic ()
  • 1 tbsp coriander seed
  • 1 tsp cumin seed
  • 450 g minced beef
  • 2 tsps brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 lemon (Juiced)
  • 1 egg (Beaten)
  • vegetable oil (For shallow frying)
  • salt & pepper
  • 1 green chilli (To garnish)
  • 2 red chillies (To garnish)
  • chilli sambel (To serve)

    Add chilli, onion and garlic into a food processor and process until finely chopped. Set aside.

    Dry fry coriander and cumin seeds in a hot frying pan for . Tip seeds into a mortar and pestle and grind.

    In a large bowl add meat, ground spices and stir in the onion mixture. Add brown sugar, soy sauce, lemon juice and beaten egg. Season to taste.

    Shape the meat mixture into small even-size balls, and chill for to firm them up.

    Heat oil in large frying pan, fry meatballs for , turning often, until cooked through and browned (in batches).

    Drain meatballs on kitchen paper.

    On a platter, add meatballs and sprinkle over the finely sliced chilli. Serve with sambal.
