Italian bread small loaf for about 6 people.

Ingredients

  • 1 c warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ tsps yeast
  • 1 ½ tsps sugar
  • 1 ½ tbsps soft shortening
  • 1 ½ tsps salt
  • 3 c bread flour

Instructions

    Mix warm water, yeast, sugar, egg yolk, shortening, salt, mix and let set , add flour about 1/4 c at a time until a stiff dough forms, dump onto a lightly floured surface and knead for or until smooth and elastic like, oil a lg bowl, place dough in bowl, turn to coat, cover with a damp towel, let proof until double in size. Knock down and knead for a couple of minutes, Press into a rectangle and roll tightly into a french loaf. spray with pam and let rise until double in size, bake at 350 until well browned. If you make this early you can let it set a few hours then it makes a great garlic bread.
