The recipe calls for quite a bit of added salt. For health & taste reasons, I've omitted that. For the same reason, I recommend using unsalted butter.

Ingredients

  • butter (unsalted)
  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tsps vanilla
  • 3 c. oats (quick-cooking)
  • 3 ½ c. flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 12 oz chocolate chips (semisweet)
  • 1 c. walnuts (chopped)

    Preheat oven to 350° F. Bring butter to room temperature.

    Cream together 1-c. butter & brown sugar till fluffy; then beat in eggs & 2-tsp. vanilla.

    Stir together oats, flour, & baking soda. Blend into butter mixture.

    Stirring constantly. melt & blend the milk, chocolate, & 2-tbsp. butter over low heat.

    Remove chocolate from heat; then stir in nuts & remaining vanilla.

    Pat 1/2 of oat batter into ungreased 15 1/2x10 1/2x1-in. baking pan. Spread chocolate on top; then sprinkle with remaining oat batter.

    Bake ., cool, & cut into bars.
