This recipe was submitted by Jean Albertowicz (Mrs. Theodore J. Albertowicz) (1916-2003) of Richland, Wasdhington. She apparently competed a number of times because, in 1963, she was the Senior Best of Class winner with her Banana Split Layer Cake.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Hot Roll Mix
  • ¾ c. water (warm)
  • 1 egg
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened [Option 1a])
  • 8 oz Neufchatel (softened [Option 1b])
  • 8 tbsps butter
  • 1 1/4 oz. envelope cheese sauce mix
  • ¾ tsp barbecue seasoning
  • ½ c. chopped nuts (Optional)

    Using water & egg, prepare hot roll dough per the package directions.

    Cover & let rise in warm place till light & doubled in size (.).

    On medium speed of electric mixer, blend cream cheese/Neufchatel, 2-tbsp. softened butter, cheese sauce mix, & barbecue seasoning together till smooth & creamy.

    Grease cookie sheet or 13x9-in. baking pan.

    On floured surface, roll dough to 15x12 in. rectangle; then cut into 4 15x3 in. strips. Cut each of those strips into 3 5x3 in. strips.

    Spread about 1-tbsp. of cream cheese mixture on each dough strip.

    Roll up each strip, starting with 3-in. end. Pinch edges to seal & place seam-side down on cookie sheet/baking pan.

    Diagonally slash each roll across top.

    Spread leftover cream cheese mixture on top of rolls & sprinkle with nuts, if using the latter.

    Cover & let rise in warm place till light & doubled in size (.).

    Preheat oven to 375° F.

    Melt remaining butter & drizzle across top of rolls.

    Bake till golden brown (.).
