Ingredients

  • 1 c. butter (unsalted; softened [Option 1a])
  • 1 c. shortening (Option 1b)
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 2 ¼ c. flour
  • 1 tsp instant granules coffee ()
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 6 oz chocolate chips (semisweet)
  • ½ c. chopped almonds ()

    Preheat oven to 375° F. Grease a 15x10x1-in. jellyroll pan.

    Cream butter. Gradually mix in brown sugar; then stir in almond extract.

    Mix together flour, baking powder, & coffee; then thoroughly blend into butter-brown sugar.

    Blend in chocolate chips & almonds.

    Press dough into pan & bake .

    Cut into 3x1-in. bars while pastry is still warm, but leave in pan. Cool completely before removing.

    Store in airtight containers.
